How to select curtains for a drawing room and a bedroom
The same window needs different fabric depending on whether guests sit there in the afternoon or you sleep there at 6 a.m. Start with light and privacy. Style comes third.

Why curtains fail in real homes
People buy the colour they liked on a phone screen, then discover the panel is too short, too sheer, or too heavy for a small rod. In many Indian apartments the drawing room faces the street and the bedroom faces a neighbour. That means one room needs a public “dress” layer and the other needs a blackout sleep layer. Buying one fabric for the whole flat is the most common expensive mistake.
How to measure before you shop
- Measure the rod width, not just the glass. Add 15–20 cm on each side so daylight does not leak.
- Decide drop: 1 cm above the floor for a tailored drawing-room look, or a slight puddle only if you will not mop that edge daily.
- Buy fullness of about 1.8–2.2× the rod width. Flat panels look cheap even in expensive cloth.
- Check ceiling height. Hanging the rod closer to the ceiling makes a short room look taller.
Drawing room: how and why
How
Use two layers if the window gets harsh sun: a sheer for daytime softness and a lined drape for evenings. Cotton-blend, linen-look polyester, or silk-blend work in formal rooms. Choose a lining if the fabric is pale — unlined pastels fade fast on a west wall.
Why
A drawing room is judged in daylight and in lamp light. Sheers keep the room from feeling boxed in while guests are there. The heavier layer gives privacy after sunset and stops the TV from reflecting a street lamp. Pattern should be quieter than the sofa; the curtain is a frame, not the artwork.
Bedroom: how and why
How
Prioritise a blackout or dim-out lining. If you like a soft look, keep a decorative face fabric and add a separate blackout layer on the same double rod. Avoid heavy velvet in humid cities unless you can wash or steam it. Eyelet headings are easier for daily open-and-close than pinch pleats.
Why
Sleep quality tracks light leak. A beautiful unlined cotton that glows at 5:30 a.m. will wake you every summer. Bedrooms also need acoustic softness; a lined curtain takes the edge off traffic noise better than a roller blind alone. Dark colours hide dust less than mid-tones — pick a weave you are willing to vacuum monthly.
Fabric cheat sheet
- Sheer voile / net — daytime filter, zero night privacy.
- Cotton / cotton blend — breathable, wrinkles, good for bedrooms with lining.
- Polyester linen-look — keeps shape in humidity, best everyday drawing-room cloth.
- Velvet — winter luxury; skip in coastal damp unless you like upkeep.
- Blackout coated — sleep first; pair with a prettier face cloth if the back looks plastic.
Next: light the same rooms properly
Curtains control daylight. Lamps control night. Read the lighting guide before you buy both in one cart.
